SCP-087 is an experimental 3D horror game developed in Unity.

Before diving in to our SCP-087 review, it may be helpful to have a bit of background about SCP Foundation. SCP stands for special containment procedures, which are a set of standardized procedures for dealing with locations, entities and objects that are preternatural. SCP Foundation is the organization responsible for establishing these protocols and carrying them out when needed.

SCP Foundation is, of course, a fictional organization. What makes it interesting beyond the subject matter is that it isn’t created or owned by any authors. It is a web-based collaborative effort that provides the basis for many different artistic creations. Many of these are prose that describe various special containment procedures, but artists have begun to express their SCP visions in other ways too.

SCP-087 is one such example. It is a 3D horror game developed in the Unity game creation engine. SCP-087 has often been described as an experimental game, and it can be argued that it is experimental on several different fronts. It is an experimentation of the Unity engine, an experimentation of 3D horror game design and an experimentation of artistic creation within the SCP Foundation universe.

SCP-087 is a freeware game in that it costs you nothing to download, install and play. You can play it as much and as often as you like without limitation. SCP-087 is also an open-source resource for game design. It provides the basis for other 3D horror games set in this world. If you enjoy SCP-087, you’re sure to enjoy some of the other SCP projects that have arisen with this as their foundation.

The alphanumeric SCP-087 label is a case file. It refers to a staircase that seems to descend forever and exists in an environment that consumes light. As the player, you descend this staircase for as far as 270 levels. Along the way, you’ll encounter jump scares and general creepiness, but eventually, there are actual entities to contend with, and these often have mechanics that differ from those before them.

While SCP-087 may have never achieved mainstream notoriety, it is a success. The game is very effective at creating an atmosphere in which the player experiences terror. If you play in a dark room and really immerse yourself, this game delivers the scares in a way that many AAA horror titles never could.

There are no negatives to speak of as long as you manage expectations. This is a small indie title that was made without a lot of resources. There are no AAA bells and whistles, and the conceit of consuming darkness is used not only to create atmosphere but to disguise graphics that may not stand up to scrutiny. None of this really matters, though, when you’re peeing your pants and having a blast.
